It was more disappointment on the Grand Slam stage for Serena Williams last night as her quest for a 24th Grand Slam title came to an end against an inspired opponent. The draw had been set up for a potential dream final in the US Open, as Williams could have come up against 2018 champion Naomi Osaka in the final of the competition.

However, it wasn’t to be, as Williams was beaten by Victoria Azarenka at Flushing Meadows. Nobody could have foreseen the Belarusian achieving that feat before the game, and the chances of it happening looked even more unlikely early in the match.

    Tennis News: Azarenka Fights Back

Williams took complete control of the match in the early stages of proceedings, as he comfortably took the opening set 1-6. However, the tide began to turn in the second set as the Belarusian hit back to win 6-3.

Williams’ problems began to mount in the third, as she was forced to call on her trainer in order to attend to an Achilles injury that she had sustained.

Azarenka seemed to smell blood after that short break and was ruthlessly efficient with her shots to win the final set 6-3. The defeat means that Williams must wait again if she is it to break the long-standing Grand Slam record set by Margaret Court.

Williams has now gone three years without a success on the Grand Slam stage, which is the longest dry spell that she has had during her career.

Nothing should be taken away from the Belarussian player, as her fantastic patch of form continues. This was her first appearance at a semi-final stage of a Grand Slam event for seven years as her career has been affected off the court. However, her form couldn’t be any better, as he has now won eleven matches without defeat.

She will face a stern challenge in the final of the US Open however, as she will come up against two-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka. The Japanese player has been in outstanding form throughout the competition.

She saw off Jennifer Brady in the semi-final as she won 6-7, 6-3, 3-6. Osaka was made to work very hard for the opening set, but after losing the second, she was able to maintain her focus to win comfortably.
