Prince William shared a deep personal message about men’s mental health on a BBC radio show. The Prince of Wales explained that while he was a first responder, he experienced some mental health struggles and admitted that his mental health “was deteriorating.”
William Felt He Needed a Break From His Frist Responder Job to Deal with Complicated Emotions
William shared an example of how he tried to manage his emotions. He had been working with the air ambulance as a pilot.
He said,
“Over time, I noticed my mental health really deteriorating and I hadn’t really clocked onto it because, in that community, you try to make light of some of the moments just to keep sane and keep going.”
William continued,
“It wasn’t until I stepped away from it on a sort of longer break that I looked at myself and went, ‘My God, I’m carrying around everyone’s emotional baggage. It was really weighing me down.”
He said that working in emergency services can be emotionally difficult, given
“how emotionally and physically demanding it can be.”
William said he needed to step away and process his own emotions.
He told radio host Professor Green on the special episode of Radio 1’s Life Hack that
“it takes him a long time to understand his emotions.”
William also said that more male role models needed to speak out about mental health so that more men would follow their lead.
The Future King Believes Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Need More Attention
According to the Daily Mail, the future King also told the host that he had
“hoped having discussions about suicide prevention and mental health would eventually become second nature to us all.”
He said that young men who considered suicide were a “national catastrophe” and that the issue needs more attention.
William urged men to
“check in with yourself and work out why you’re feeling like you do. Sometimes there’s an obvious explanation, sometimes there isn’t.”
The Prince admitted that he was
“not immune to bad days”
and opened up about how some of the people he meets who are experiencing hard times help him
“put his own life into perspective.”
He went on to explain,
“But also, I carry with me their burden sometimes, and that’s the bit I find very difficult sometimes. I feel other people’s pain, and that overwhelms me sometimes, and I have to deal with that.”
William advocates for those suffering from mental health struggles to create their own
“toolbox to help with life’s challenges.”
“He Was Born a Prince, But He Lost His Mum In Front Of the Entire World.”
Mental health has long been of enormous importance to the Prince and Princess of Wales. William’s wife, Kate Middleton, and Prince William established the Royal Foundation, which launched the National Suicide Prevention Network.
William shared that mental health organizations can serve as a “stepping stone” in helping those with mental health issues.
He believes that talking about these issues more and getting the right help can prevent suicides, especially since
“tomorrow, you might wake up and feel very different,”
He pointed out.
One of the guests on the show, a rapper, opened up about the loss of his father, who took his own life. He said,
“You ask a man how he feels, and he tells you what he thinks.”
The rapper was impressed with Prince William and said,
“He was born a Prince, but he lost his mum in front of the world.”
He went on,
“That’s really significant, from someone who’s also lost a parent in an equally horrible way, that’s suffering, that’s human, no title helps you escape that.”
Prince William and Kate Middleton have made mental health the cornerstone of their work. The royal couple focuses on breaking stigmas, supporting early childhood development, and funding crisis care services.
