Kate Middleton and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, share an unbreakable bond, as she’s provided invaluable support during the Princess of Wales’ cancer struggles.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s home, Bagshot Park, is a 20-minute drive from Adelaide Cottage, where Prince William and Kate live, and they spend a lot of time together.
Sophie Mentored Princess Kate
Sophie married into the royal family when she wed Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, in June 1999. Since then, she’s been one of the firm’s most hardworking, outspoken members.
Sophie doesn’t get as much media attention as she should. She’s nicknamed the royal family’s “secret weapon.” She does the low-profile, hard work for the monarchy and is willing to travel to places most royals won’t go.
For example, she was the first royal to visit Ukraine since Russia’s invasion. Kate and Sophie are a lot alike. Sophie values and respects the monarchy, and because of that, she’s valued and respected.
Royal expert Kinsey Schofield explained, “Her path was not the easiest one, but she is living proof that patience is a virtue. If you work hard and stay focused, your time to shine will come.”
In March, Princess Catherine announced her cancer diagnosis to the world. She was out of public view for months. During that time, Kate often turned to her aunt Sophie for her friendship and guidance.
Interestingly, Sophie had offered to mentor Meghan Markle to teach her how to be a productive member of the royal family, and she rudely declined, thinking she was above the institution.
But when she made the same offer to Kate, she lit up like a Christmas tree. Sophie gave Kate sage advice about being in the public eye and being careful with words.
Two years into marrying Edward, Sophie made a few regrettable comments that forced her to rebuild her reputation, dive into her royal duties, and pay more attention to how her choices reflected the royal family.
Kate Middleton And Duchess Sophie Share A Very Sisterly Relationship
Kate may be Sophie’s niece, but they have a very sisterly relationship. They share the same interests and have a similar sense of humor.
In 2017, when the royals arrived at Royal Ascot, Sophie almost fell onto Kate in their carriage, and they were pictured giggling like schoolgirls.
The Duchess tried to kiss Kate on the cheek, but when the carriage stopped, she flew forward. Royal expert Jennie Bond explained, “They’ve often been seen enjoying a private joke in public and certainly seem more like sisters than aunt and niece by marriage.”
Kate Middleton and Duchess Sophie are also both athletic. The Duchess goes running and is an avid Pilates student. The Princess of Wales is also known for her raw athleticism, as she played hockey and tennis in school and has passed her love of sports down to her kids.
Sophie also “secretly” shops for Kate. She shares Kate’s love of fashion and often helps her pick clothes for royal engagements. They share a similar sense of style.
Kate Middleton has found that Sophie is a loyal confidant and an excellent sounding board. The two ladies have formed a bond that has comforted Kate during this tumultuous year.
