Prince William announced the winners of the fourth annual Earthshot Awards in Cape Town. Model Heidi Klum and Billy Porter handed out the prizes.
The Earthshot Prize Is A “Collaborative Movement For Change”
The Earthshot Awards celebrate and support groundbreaking solutions for climate and environmental issues. Five recipients are awarded each year for their contributions to environmentalism.
The Prince Of Wales spoke to the BBC and explained the Earthshot prize.
“isn’t just a celebration of winners. It’s a collaborative movement for change.”
William said he
“hoped Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were watching at home.”
He also said that Kate was doing well and had been
“amazing during her rough year of cancer treatment.”
William also said that he and his family try to do what they can to help the environment.
“We go through all the basics of recycling and making sure we minimize water use and turning off the lights when we leave the house and stuff like that, and making sure, which is sensible in what we do around the environment,”
He commented.
“The Earthshot Prize has got to be a bit more global than that. We are trying to do big-scale ambition and big-scale business to tackle some of the solutions,”
Prince William proclaimed.
He told the adorable story about his friendship bracelet that Charlotte lovingly made for her father, which sweetly displayed the word “Papa.”
William said Charlotte had created the special bracelet for a Taylor Swift concert they attended together and gifted it to him. He promised his little girl that he wouldn’t lose it. It’s very important to him.
Africa Suffers The Most From The Negative Impacts OF Climate Change
The Awards were held in a reusable eco super dome with green carpets for the star-studded affair. Model Winnie Harlow was also a presenter,
And she said,
“I was really honored to get a royal letter asking if I could come here.”
“I felt really honored because I feel this should be something near and dear to everyone’s heart when it comes to taking care of Mother Earth, the planet,”
She added.
The son of the deceased Steve Irwin, Robert Irwin, an Australian conservationist, was also a guest at the ceremony.
The recipients included an initiative that saved a rare antelope species from extinction and a Kenyan company that utilizes solar-powered fridges to prevent harvested crops from spoiling. The result is improved profits and stable incomes.
Another winner delivered circular economy waste management in Ghana and Uganda. They helped communities clean up waste, build infrastructure, and create jobs.
There are five Earthshot prizes, with goals of Protecting and Restoring Nature, Cleaning Our Air, Fixing Our Climate, Building a Waste-free World, and Revving Our Oceans.
All the attendees were asked to wear sustainable clothing, either a previously worn outfit or clothes created from recycled materials.
The Awards were broadcast live in Africa and streamed online. According to the World Meteorological Organization,
“Africa is responsible for only a fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions but is suffering disproportionately from climate change.”
Africa is the continent that has the most difficulty contending with the negative impacts of climate change. William wants to help in any way possible to make the world’s future brighter through environmentalism.
