Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, celebrated turning 89 on October 9th. This morning, outside his Kensington Palace home, Wren House, he was treated to a spirited rendition of “Happy Birthday” on the bagpipes.
He was also serenaded with “Hills of the Beggar” and “Scotland the Brave.” He was joined by his wife, Katharine, his son, Lord Nicholas Windsor, and his younger brother, Prince Michael of Kent.
The Duke Of Kent Serves Over 140 Charities And Organizations
Edward is Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin, with whom he was very close. She attended his christening when she was nine years old.
Edward has been a working royal family member since the Queen’s coronation in June 1953. He is still serving and is associated with over 140 charities and organizations.
He was right by Her Majesty’s side for June 2021’s Trooping the Color, as Prince Philip had passed away that April.
Just three months before Queen Elizabeth passed, the two appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. In September 2022, he walked behind the Queen’s coffin during her funeral.
King Charles wished the Duke of Kent a very Happy Birthday this morning on the royal family’s official Instagram account. The King posted pictures of Edward smiling as he performed his royal duties.
“Wishing the Duke of Kent a very Happy 89th birthday today!”
He exclaimed with a cake emoji next to the message.
Prince Edward has recently stepped down from certain roles, like Colonel of the Scots Guard this past April, but he still has a vital role in the monarchy.
Last week, he appeared with the King at a reception. They celebrated the Commonwealth diaspora ahead of Charles’s tour to Samoa and attended a concert.
He also held a meeting in his role as Britain’s most senior Freemason. Prince Edward was appointed Grand Master for the United Grand Lodge of England in June 1967
Prince Edward Is The Longest Serving Duke In British History
One of his most notable roles is as the former president of the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and as a presenter of Wimbledon trophies.
Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, was born on October 9th, 1935, to Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark and Prince George, the Duke.
Observers reported at the time that a stunning black cat was seen grooming himself on the house’s doorstep. This appearance is apparently a sign of good luck for the new royal baby.
Edward had two siblings, Princess Alexandria and Prince Michael. Edward met his wife, Katharine, in the 1950s while serving the Calvary regiment of the Army of Scotland, Royal Scots Greys.
The couple were wed in June 1961. The bride and groom broke royal tradition. Instead of getting married at Westminster Abbey or St. Paul’s Cathedral, they tied the knot in her home county of Yorkshire at York Minster, which had not seen a royal wedding for 600 years.
The Duke and Duchess of Kent have three wonderful children: George Windsor, Earl of St. Andrews, Lord Nicholas Windsor, and Lady Helen Taylor.
Edward is an impressive member of the royal family. Prince Edward has held the title Duke of Kent for over 82 years. He is the longest-serving Duke in British history.
