Vegan Animal Rising protestors were caught on video footage vandalizing the first official portrait of King Charles since the coronation. The portrait is on display at the Pall Mall Philip Mould Art Gallery in London. Artist Jonathon Yeo painted it.
Two Vegan Activists Defaced The Painting Of King Charles
Two activists, named Daniel Juniper and Ben Thomas, defaced the painting and covered the monarch’s face with Wallace and Gromit stickers. Wallace and Gromit is a British animated comedy franchise.
The pair used rollers to plaster a picture of Wallace alongside a quote with a message that said,
“No cheese, Gromit. Look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms.”
They claimed to be trying to bring attention to animal cruelty, as King Charles is a patron of the RSPCA. They know that His Majesty loves Wallace and Gromit.
The protestors have asked him to reconsider his support of the organization because of what takes place on the farms endorsed by the RSPCA.
Their statement to the press was,
“Even though we hope this is amusing to His Majesty, we also call on him to seriously reconsider if he wants to be associated with the awful suffering across farms being endorsed by the RSPCA. Charles has made it clear he is sensitive to the suffering of animals in UK farms; now is the perfect time for him to step up and call on the RSPCA to drop the Assured Scheme and tell the truth about animal farming.”
The activists accused the RSPCA of supporting the use of gas chambers to stun and slaughter pigs. It’s terrible, and they know they are guilty of animal torture.
Australian animal rights campaigner Joey Carbstrong has claimed that the RSPCA was complacent in the “abhorrent, barbaric, and cruel torture” of pigs through its welfare branding on pork products. Dead and rotting animals were also said to be found at various farm locations.
Charles’s Portrait Aims To Capture King’s Ascension To The Throne
In the portrait, Charles is wearing the red coat of the Welsh Guards, which is the regiment for which he was made colonel in 1975.
He has a sword in his hand and a butterfly just above his left shoulder. There are swirls of fiery reds throughout the background of the picture.
The picture aims to capture Charles’ transition as a leader and his ascension to the throne. Unfortunately, some criticized the portrait, claiming it looks like an image set in hell.
The portrait will be on display until June 21st. King Charles unveiled it in front of Camilla, Yeo, and his family. The vandalism did not cause any harm to the portrait.
“We know that Charles is a big fan of Wallace and Gromit; he has publicity said before,”
Juniper explained.
“And so we wanted to get King Charles’s attention in a way that he would enjoy and therefore be more likely to listen to us. There was a buzz around the gallery, people came and talked to us, took photos of us, and then we were politely asked to leave.”
RSPCA has denied the allegations and said that their staff and volunteers rescue, care for, and speak up for animals. Their concerns about animal welfare are very serious, and an investigation has already been launched.
