Meghan Markle and Prince Harry bypassed the Super Bowl last night despite reports that they were set to attend. Beyonce and husband Jay Z, Taylor Swift, and Paul McCartney joined in the fun as the Kansas City Chiefs made the winning play at the last minute and won the Super Bowl.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Were Invited to the Super Bowl
Prince Harry presented Pittsburgh Steelers’ Cameron Heyward the Walter Peyton NFL Man of the Year Award at the NFL Honors Award show in Las Vegas.
Harry and Meghan were expected to attend the Super Bowl. They missed an excellent PR opportunity, but Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were the main draw.
An NFL insider explained,
“It is well known the Prince loves American football, and bosses have extended an invitation to him following his appearance at the awards.”
Ultimately, the couple was preparing to go to Vancouver Whisler in Canada for the Launching Event of the Invictus Games. This trip took precedence over the Super Bowl for them.
For those who don’t know, the Invictus Games is a multi-sport event where sick, wounded, or injured veterans participate in sports and games. It is a positive event to help them feel a sense of achievement and camaraderie.
At the NFL award ceremony, Harry made some jokes,
“Good evening, NFL. It’s an honor to be with you all tonight. I really love how you stole rugby from us and made it your own. Instead of passing it backward, just pass it forward. Why not wear pads and a helmet? Of course, have an offense and a defense; that makes sense.”
He continued,
“And why not take a breather every 15 seconds? And you know what? Instead of a 10-month season, let’s just make it 18 weeks. Genius. All kidding aside, what you guys do on and off the field is truly remarkable. You are role models for millions in the way you carry yourselves and the way you give back.”
The 2025 Invictus Games Will Be Focused on Winter Sports
The Duke and Duchess will be at Vancouver Whistle 2025 One Year to Go celebrations. This is the first time the Invictus Games will focus on winter sports. The games will take place in 2025, from February 8th to 16th.
Some sports for disabled veterans will feature wheelchair curling and Nordic skiing. Harry may participate in some of the games. At the inaugural games in London in 2014, he played wheelchair rugby with his cousin, Zara Tindall, and her husband, Mike.
Canada is very special to the Duke and Duchess. Harry and Meghan attended the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto as a couple for the first time.
At one point, Harry and Meghan were looking for houses in Canada. Harry wrote about his fondness for Canada in his tell-all memoir, “Spare.” He talked about the taste of freedom that he and Meghan experienced there.
He said this about Canada at the time,
“If we could just find a place the press didn’t know about, Canada might be the answer.”
This jaunt to Canada will be one year until the 2025 Invictus Games. Harry and Meghan hope to bring more attention to the games next year.
