This is one of those things that isn’t a surprise to ‘Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) spoilers, but it still is.
From the second Dick Van Dyke appeared on the show we knew it was for a limited run and there’s every chance we’ll never see him again and that’s understandable given his age and the toll working on a soap opera can take.
We had hoped he’d appear here and there like Victor Kiriakis (John Aniston) and Doug Williams (Bill Hayes) and there’s still a chance since he is around Doug’s age.

But the trick would be how to do it since John Black (Drake Hogestyn) and Marlena Evans (Diedre Hall)’s place only has so much space and it’d be hard for him to disappear like Victor in the Kiriakis mansion or Doug in their house.
So it’s not a surprised that John helped Timothy Robicheaux (Dick Van Dyke) move to an assisted living facility to make room for Tate Black (Jaime Martin Mann).
But given how John was so adamant about his father living with them, it was a surprise. But since the assisted living facility is nearby we could still see him.
‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Making the best of the situation
It could’ve been far worse as ‘Days of Our Lives’ feared they were going to kill Timothy off, and this has opened the door for a couple of fun moments.
The first is obviously Tate staying there as we’ll get to see if Brady Black (Eric Martsolf) can handle him better than he can his daughter, but also it gave John the chance to use his father to get Abe Carver (James Reynolds) to get over himself.
In what was a master stroke, John offered to set Paulina Price (Jackée Harry) up with Timothy and Abe was immediately threatened by the 97 year old and his jealousy won out over his fear.
It was a brilliant move by John, and it opened up the possibility of seeing Timothy back again at some point.
We have little doubt Abe will share the story with Paulina at some point, and she will probably want to meet the man that had Abe all worked up.
We have a feeling John will keep everyone on their toes going forward since his father is a phone call away and they can move him back in if Tate doesn’t shape up and so on.
