A new A&E docuseries titled “Secrets of Miss America” sheds light on the dark side of America’s oldest beauty pageant, which has long been seen as a representation of the American dream.

The series features insights from 20 former Miss Americas and pageant insiders, revealing shocking scandals and long-kept secrets that have plagued the organization.

Once a cultural phenomenon attracting an audience of 80 million viewers annually, the Miss America pageant has faced significant challenges in recent years.

Allegations of “tyrannical leadership,” a leaked email scandal exposing misogyny and racism within the organization, and internal conflicts over the decision to eliminate the swimsuit segment in 2018 have tarnished its reputation.

Some former contestants express their concerns that the pageant has become excessively progressive and question its relevance in today’s landscape.

The pageant’s attempt to rebrand itself as “Miss America 2.0” in 2019 resulted in record-low ratings. The organization sought to stay relevant to a new generation with evolving views on beauty and sexual politics. As a result, the pageant has lost its former glamour, virtue, and appeal.

In its early years, the Miss America pageant predominantly focused on physical beauty and charm. Contestants would showcase their figures in swimsuits and grace the stage in elegant evening gowns, with their appearances playing a pivotal role in determining the winner.

However, the pageant gradually evolved to include talent segments and interviews that aimed to highlight the contestants’ skills and intelligence.

During the 1940s, the Miss America pageant faced challenges and was suspended due to World War II. However, it made a triumphant return in 1945 and continued to gain popularity throughout the following decades.
