Jay Leno has been discharged from hospital and is “looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with his family” after being treated for serious burns sustained in a recent petrol fire accident. Keep reading below for everything you need to know.

The former host of The Tonight Show was said to be thankful for the care he had received following the incident and “very appreciative of all the well wishes.” The incident reportedly took place while Leno was working underneath a car in Burbank, California last week. The comedian suffered “deep second-degree” and possibly third-degree burns.

Leno, a renowned motoring enthusiast with a huge collection of rare and expensive cars and motorcycles, was underneath a vehicle when the accident occurred. A fuel leak covered Leno in gasoline which was ignited by a spark.

“I do anticipate him making a full recovery,” said Dr Peter Grossman, who described 72-year-old Mr Leno’s condition as “good.”

“Our hope is when everything is all said and done he will do well,” Dr Grossman said. “But burn injuries are progressive and dynamic and it’s hard to predict ultimately what the final outcome will be at this stage of the game.”

Grossman told journalists it was too early to say if Leno will require additional surgery beyond the second procedure scheduled later this week. Leno has also been undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which stimulates oxygen circulation in the blood stream to speed up the healing process.

Leo turned his love of cars into a CNBC series, Jay Leno’s Garage, and now hosts a revival of the game show You Bet Your Life. The  presenter and comedian took over NBC’s Tonight Show when long-time host Johnny Carson retired in 1992, and returned for another stint from 2010 to 2014, before handing over the reins to current host Jimmy Fallon.
