Elon Musk and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez engaged in a heated Twitter argument over the billionaire’s plan to charge verified users a fee to keep their status on the social media site.
Musk, Twitter’s new owner, declared this week that he will adopt a rule requiring users to pay an $8 monthly charge to maintain their blue check badges, which serve as identification of genuine accounts. He initially placed the cost at $20 before reducing it. When he intends to make the $8 fee official is unknown.
Many people were upset by this, including AOC, who fired off a barrage of tweets against Musk on Tuesday and Wednesday.

She even voiced complaints about how poorly her Twitter notifications were functioning. Then Musk started arguing with her. The Tesla/SpaceX CEO tweeted a picture of an AOC sweater that costs $58 and is available on her website, ostensibly defending his $8 subscription fee by demonstrating that she is also looking to make money off of her venture. Late in October, Musk paid a staggering $44 billion to acquire Twitter. Since then, he has let go of a number of top executives and is rumored to be planning to fire half the workforce.
The hilarious battle has created many laughs and the back-and-forth jabs have certainly put a smile on our faces. Both are overreacting for no reason. For AOC, $8 for verification isn’t a big deal and would help with bots, that’s just true. It’s also ironic that she was defending Twitter as a private business just a year ago, but now it’s the worst thing in the world.
As for Musk, while his tweets are funny and he likes taking jabs at people, he should just manage the company for now and worry about arguing with people online later.
