Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter has removed a lyric from her new album that some people felt was ableist and offensive, proving that she has heard their complaints. On Bey’s “Renaissance” album, the song “Heated” contains the line, “Spazzin’ on that ass, spazz on that ass.” Beyonce decided to change the word after receiving criticism for using it, according to Variety.
Although her team claims the word was never meant to be misused negatively, they are still changing it. When the album came out, the singer was quickly met with disapproval online. One person commented that she is still a powerhouse performer, but added, “But that doesn’t excuse her use of ableist language.”
The news of her new album was posted online 4 weeks ago, and yet comments continue to come in. There’s nothing free and adventurous about censoring yourself Beyonce.
“Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment.”

So what’s the complaint about spazz? It’s derived from ‘spastic’ which refers to muscle spasms and those who are unable to control the spasms in their body apparently found this offensive. This comes after Lizzo had just decided to do the same thing in her song, changing spazz. After receiving a similar backlash, she switched the line to “hold me back,” and offered up an apology … adding “As an influential artist I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world.”
I’m not sure how you feel about this, but I think it may be getting a little bit out of hand. Most sites aren’t even showing the word, and are instead censoring it out as if it’s a curse word. The self-censoring continues, and before long we’ll be speaking with a handful of words, and writing, music, and film will all but cease to exist in fear that it might offend someone.
