Zhu Yi made news over the weekend following a score of 47.04 to drop the Chinese Women’s Team from third to fifth place on night one of the team figure skating event and 2022 Winter Olympics Spoilers are afraid it doesn’t get any better.
The 19-year-old gave up her United States citizenship in 2018 to skate for Team China and changed her name to more of a Chinese-sounding name, but her first Olympics didn’t go as planned.
2022 Winter Olympics Spoilers: China’s Zhu Yi Breaks Down After Falling Twice More In Team Competition
On night one, she fell on her first combination and crashed into the wall, then had trouble with her next jump to put her in last place for the night.
As a result, Chinese fans reportedly erupted on Weibo (China’s version of Twitter) under the phrase “Zhu Yi has fallen” and reportedly called her a disgrace, accusing her of fake patriotism, and that she was only selected to complete because her father is a scientist.
These are on top of previous criticisms for not being fluent in Mandarin as most of her social media videos are in English.
2022 Winter Olympics Spoilers: Night Two Was Worse
She had a chance to prove and redeem herself on night two of the team competition, but it didn’t get any easier for her as she fell on her first jump and stumbled later on to cement last place with a total score of 91.41.
By the end of her skate, her emotions understandably overflowed and she broke down in tears while fans once again took to social media to attack her and continue questioning how she was selected over anyone else.
Her performance caused China to remain in fifth place to conclude the event and watch as Russia won gold, the United States silver, and Japan with the bronze medal.
2022 Winter Olympics Spoilers: Mental Toughness
2022 Winter Olympics Spoilers know being mentally tough goes hand in hand with preparation and ability in sports, and after the event, Zhu spoke about how she’s focusing on her singles events and mentally dealing with the challenges before her.
From CNN.com:
“I am relieved because [there is] a lot of pressure and people are expecting a lot,” Zhu told reporters after the free skate event. “But right now, I’m just going to move on and focus on my individual events.”
She added: “Honestly, I’ve trained really hard and I think the main thing is coping mentally. I’m trying not to get distracted by outside influence.”
2022 Winter Olympics Spoilers doubt things won’t get easier for her, but she can start to redeem herself if she can correct her mistakes. We’ll have to wait and see if she’s successful and see if she’ll be a success story.
