1988 was the first and last time the Jamaicans had a four-man bobsled team qualify for the Winter Olympics until this January it was announced they qualified for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, China and 2022 Winter Olympic Spoilers can’t wait.

It marks the end of a 24-year run since their historical 1988 run that was the 1993 John Candy movie “Cool Runnings” was based on.

The 1988 team made news and captured hearts as the underdogs and for not finishing their race. The 2022 Olympics are also the first games held since Sam Clayton Jr., a member of the original team, passed away.

To add this moment, Team Jamaica also qualified a two-man bobsled team, a woman’s mono bob team in the event’s inaugural games, and their first-ever alpine skier, Benjamin Alexander, who is a former DJ and qualified in the giant shalom.

Jamaica has had numerous two-man teams over the years — 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2014 — and their two women bobsled team made their first appearance at the 2018 Winter Games

This is a great moment for the country, sport and Olympics as it continues to demonstrate how we can reach our dreams if we work hard enough, and the qualifying team definitely had to work hard.

2022 Winter Olympic Spoilers: Creative Thinking

With the pandemic in full swing, they had to come up with different training methods, such as pushing a Mini Cooper down a road to simulate pushing the bobsled.

It’s reminiscent of the 1988 team when the soon to be Team Jamaica had to develop their own methods to prepare for the Olympics.

Their ingenuity and determination continues to be an inspiration for us all, and it’s going to be great to see them in action again.

2022 Winter Olympic Spoilers: The Team

Since the announcement of their qualification, we were left wondering who would comprise Team Jamaica, but we only had to wait a week or two to hear the team update.

Team Jamaica’s bobsled will be piloted by Shanwayen Stephens, and he’ll have Rolando Reid, Ashley Watson, and Mathew Wekpe riding with him as push athletes.

With their ingenuity in training and desire to be in the games, 2022 Winter Olympic Spoilers are excited to see them take part and wish them the best. With some luck, they could end their story with a medal, and that would be an awesome addition to the history books and their legacy.
