Netflix Nabs Roald Dahl’s Back Catalog

There are new reports that say Netflix has bought Roald Dahl’s entire back catalog in what a lot of people see as a record deal. The streaming giant said that it plans on creating a “unique universe” of products based on Dahl’s books. Here’s what you need to know.

Netflix said in a press release that the two companies “are joining forces to bring some of the world’s most loved stories to current and future fans in creative new ways.”

This means the company will now own classics like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory“, “Matilda” and “The Witches” and paves the way for all of the author’s back catalogue to be brought to life on screen.

Both companies also stressed that they would stay true the stories’ “unique spirit” and their “universal themes of surprise and kindness, while also sprinkling some fresh magic into the mix.”

The statement reads: “Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company share a deep love of storytelling and a growing, global fan base. Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to write multiple new chapters of these beloved stories, delighting children and adults around the world for generations to come.”

With that said though, Netflix might have to now deal with Dahl’s complicated legacy, as he apparently was a self-proclaimed anti-Semite.

“There is a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity, maybe it’s a kind of lack of generosity towards non-Jews. I mean, there’s always a reason why anti-anything crops up anywhere,” Dahl said in a 1983 interview with The New Statesman. “Even a stinker like Hitler didn’t just pick on them for no reason.”

In 1990, Dahl told The Independent: “I’m certainly anti-Israeli and I’ve become anti-Semitic in as much as that you get a Jewish person in another country like England strongly supporting Zionism.” Dahl’s family has since apologized for his offensive remarks.
