With Prince Harry speaking openly about his own childhood trauma and his fractured relationship with his father, Prince Charles, and the rest of the royal family, a lot of people can’t help but wonder if the Duke of Sussex is being exploited.
While there are some royal experts that believe Harry’s new home country and the American media might be exploiting him, others think it might be his wife, Meghan Markle. After all, she’s had very little to say about her own mental health issues. Here’s what you need to know.
Is Meghan Markle Exploiting Prince Harry’s Mental Health Issues?
With Prince Harry telling Dax Shepard that Prince Charles wasn’t good enough as a father and both Harry and Meghan throwing the entire royal family under the bus in their interview with Oprah Winfrey, a lot of people can’t help but wonder what the couple will say next.
But according to royal expert Camila Tominey, she thinks there is a “degree of exploitation” going on with interviewers only worried about ratings and not the subsequent damage that often follows these tell-alls.
“I think you can talk about your own mental health but you have to be aware of the consequences on other people’s,” she said, according to the Daily Mail, “Like the fact the Queen has just buried her husband, the father of Prince Charles, and then the son is over across the Atlantic having a go about the way he’s been brought up.”
Camila also thinks that people will encourage Harry to open up more just for the ratings.
“Going over to America, the other side of the coin you could say is that there is a degree of exploitation going on,” she said.
“The Americans are rubbing their heads together with glee, they know this man is quite damaged, disenfranchised from his family. I know they have a living to earn and they are seeking financial independence in America, but let’s just handle all of this with care. They both had a difficult time, neither of them have a particularly good relationship with a large portion of their families, and then you got people hosting podcasts thinking, ‘Brilliant, this will get the ratings.”
Harry recently accused Charles of handing him down a “cycle of genetic pain” and that “he treated me the way he was treated,” suggesting that Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth didn’t do such a good job in parenting.
