Rush Limbaugh, the conservative radio host, and media icon has died Wednesday, February 17th after a battle with cancer. He was 70 years old. The news comes by way of CNN.

His wife, Kathryn Limbaugh, made the announcement on his radio show,

“As so many of you know, losing a loved one is terribly difficult, even more so when that loved one is larger than life,” she said. “Rush will forever be the greatest of all time.”

Just a year ago in February 2020, he announced that he had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, still, he continued to host his show while going through treatment. He remained hopeful that he would beat the disease.

Limbaugh was a pioneer of AM talk-radio and hosts his show for over 30 years. His show helped popularize conservative media and format in a new generation of conservative shows. He used his enormous platform to broadcast his ideas, though he would find himself in the midst of controversies for his commentary on gender and race.

He had a number of popular issues like accusing Michael J. Fox of exaggerating his Parkinson’s disease, insulted law student Sanda Fluke and relentlessly attacked Barack Obama during his presidency. He was no doubt rough around the edges.

However, through all of this, he maintained a solid audience and continued about his path. Even if you’re not on the right side politically, it’s hard to denounce some of the work Limbaugh did and how he nearly single-handedly became a king or prince of AM talk-shows.

Over the last year, he often spoke of his audience and the love and affection he had received from them. Limbaugh spoke about his audience saying it was, “unlike anything I’ve ever dreamed of or experienced.” He often preferred not to talk about his treatment or health, however.

While Limbaugh was very partisan in his beliefs and was often insulting or downright disrespectful, he has undoubtedly left a mark behind on this world. For better or for worse.

We send condolences to his friends and family and may he rest in peace.
