On Tuesday, 5th December 2022, as her trial was ending, a 97-year-old ex-secretary of a Nazi extermination camp, who is accused of involvement in the deaths of more than 10,000 individuals, expressed her regret for all that had happened.

Irmgard Furchner is being tried in Germany for offenses committed during the Nazi era. According to prosecutors, this might be one of the last trials of its kind in the country related to atrocities that happened during the Holocaust.

In her comments, Irmgard said: “I’m sorry about everything that happened. I regret that I was in Stutthof [Polish concentration camp] at the time.” Prosecutors have suggested that the judges give Furchner a two-year suspension of her sentence, meaning she would not have to serve jail time.

Meanwhile, Furchner’s attorneys requested her exoneration, arguing that the proof introduced at the trial did not indisputably demonstrate her awareness of the murders.

At the time the offences were carried out, the defendant was a minor. Despite the fact that she worked in the control area of the camp, she has claimed she was unaware of its murderous policies.

In addition, during her trial, it came to light that her husband, a former SS soldier, was conscious that individuals had been subjected to gassing at the concentration camp.

And yet, as Furchner’s trial was scheduled to start in September 2021, she attempted to run away from the retirement home where she resides and made her way to a metro station. She managed to stay away from the police, however, she was eventually captured in Hamburg.

The response on social media was far from sympathetic. Despite the fact that she is now in her late 90s, people demanded that something be done for all the horrors that had taken place. And in the process, the comments were brutal.

One person wrote: “It’s hard to muster up any sympathy for someone that got to live and enjoy life as long as she has while tens of thousands were denied that right because of her actions.”

The only thing left to do is let the legal justice do its thing and come up with a resolution. Time will tell how it all pans out. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
