The 52nd Daytime Emmy Awards aired last night, on Friday, October 17th, and General Hospital cleaned house as usual.
‘General Hospital’ Won Outstanding Daytime Drama Series And Broke The Record: Four Wins In A Row!
The longest-running soap on the air took home the award for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series. The show is on a four-year winning streak. GH has been on fire for years, so that win came as no surprise.
Admittedly, we also breathed a sigh of relief when Y&R didn’t take home the Emmy in this category. The soap needs some improvement if it’s going to go up against GH or DOOL. Both soaps are well-written powerhouses.
We also can’t wait until Beyond the Gates is eligible to be in the running for some Emmys next year. BTG is the new soap on the block, and it’s absolutely delicious.
The Lead Actress of a Daytime Drama Series is Nancy Lee Grahn from GH. Grahn did some fantastic work last year portraying a mother whose daughter was killed.
Sam McCall’s (Kelly Monaco) shocking death was brutally heartbreaking, and Grahn played her role, Alexis Davis, beautifully.
The scenes were a tearjerker as Grahn conveyed every beat of a mother’s tragic devastation with gut-wrenching honesty and maximum emotional impact. The win was beyond well-deserved.
Paul Telfer, who plays Xander Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives. We love DOOL, and Telfer is no exception. Telfer’s win is also well-deserved, as Telfer plays Xander’s complexity as both a villain and an anti-hero perfectly.
We adore Xander for his roguish sense of humor, intense personality, and his capacity to be simultaneously both good and evil.
When Telfer won, he dedicated his award to his late mother, who loved soap operas and was a massive fan of good soap villains.
Days Of Our Lives Won For Best Casting In A Daytime Drama
Speaking of good soap villains, in the Emerging Talent in a Daytime Drama Award, soap newcomer Lisa Yamada won for her portrayal of Luna Nozawa on The Bold and the Beautiful.
Fans say Luna is pure evil, and Nozawa has her character’s number down to a T. For Supporting Actor in a Daytime Drama Series, Johnathan Jackson won for his role as the infamous Luke Spencer’s (Tony Geary) son, on General Hospital.
Jackson has always been a highly skilled and competent actor, and his win was a pleasant surprise. When Jackson stepped up onstage and gave his acceptance speech, he thanked his former on-screen dad, Geary.
He said that despite not working with him for years, Geary was still with him in every single scene he performs. It was a poignant and lovely moment.
For the Best Casting in a Daytime Drama, the award went to Days of Our Lives. DOOL is spot on regarding its casting decisions, so this one was well-deserved as well.
Best Supporting Performance in a Daytime Drama, Susan Walters won for playing Diane Jenkins on The Young and the Restless.
Even though Walters won for supporting actress, she steals every scene she’s in. Walters is always fun to watch.
For Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series, Alley Mills won for her portrayal of crazy Heather Webber. Mills is always a treat when she’s on GH.
On a fun little note, GH also won for costume design and best direction. Given that some of the best-dressed women on soaps include GH’s Maura West, who plays Ava Jerome, and Laura Wright, who plays Carly Spencer, we’ll take it.
Plus, that scene last year when Kristina Corinthos-Davis (Kate Mansi) crashed through the window of Ava Jerome’s room at the Metro Court and fell into the pool was epic.
Overall, we agree with the critics here. All the Emmy winners are talented and well-deserved.
