‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers reveal that it is Maura West’s 11th anniversary on the show. Before GH, West was best known for her Emmy-winning role as troublemaker Carly Tenney on As the World Turns.
On GH, her character, the martini-drinking temptress, Ava Jerome, has had quite the journey. Maura West’s debut as Ava was on May 8th, 2013.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Ava Is Best When She’s “Bad”
As the daughter of mob boss Victor Jerome (Jack Axelrod) and the ever-unstable Delia Ryan (Ilene Kristen), Ava was destined to make an impression.
West, who was only supposed to be on the show for a five-day stint, turned into an 11-year stay in Port Charles. She hit the ball out of the park and positively wowed the powers that be. With key ties to the infamous Jerome crime family, she was set up for success on the show.
Ava has been a villain, a heroine, and everything in between. It has been said that she is an unforgettable “dame” who can be compared to Bette Davis. She has an old-school Hollywood-type style, and that’s how she carries herself on-screen.
West’s best storylines showcase her undeniable skills at playing the part of the “bad girl.” She came to town with the intent of getting a piece of ELQ. She lied and said that her daughter, Kiki Jerome (Hayley Erin), was fathered by Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth), but her father was Silas Clay (Michael Easton).
Ava and her brother, Julian Jerome (William DeVry), wanted to strengthen the Jerome mob family. Julian rolled into town pretending to be Derek Wells. The two schemed endlessly, and she murdered Sonny’s girlfriend, Connie Falconeri (Kelly Sullivan), when Connie discovered Derek’s true identity.
Ava had an affair with young Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig). She switched his medication with placebos, inadvertently leading to his demise.
Morgan stole Julian’s car, on which Ava’s sister, Olivia Jerome (Tonja Walker), planted a bomb that killed Morgan.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Beauty And The Beast
In one of her most impressive performances, Ava got a nasty burn scar on her face from starting a fire after knocking over a lantern while being confronted by Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) at the Nurses’ Ball.
The first time she sees her face after the bandages are removed, she looks in the mirror and her face is covered with sores. She tells herself that this is her karma and she deserves this.
As a woman who prided herself on her significant beauty, Ava had to contend with losing her looks, albeit temporarily, and she felt like a monster.
Her burn scar, coupled with the intense guilt she felt over what she did to Morgan, resulted in her feeling a sense of shame.
West played every beat of the storyline with masterful perfection and a vulnerability that viewers hadn’t seen before with Ava.
Through the years, we’ve seen Ava evolve as a character. She seemed to be very close to redemption until reasonably recently.
West has taken us on a journey with her character, whom we have loved to hate, felt empathy for, and rooted for. Maura and Ava are a class act.
Happy Anniversary to Maura West. Here’s to many more to come.
