The Firm and King Charles must contend with a reduced working monarchy as the three key royals are out of commission, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have left the royal family in the lurch.
King Charles, This is Not the Time to “Slim Down” the Monarchy
The Princess of Wales is currently in the hospital. She underwent surgery on her abdomen. There was no news as to why she had to have the procedure, but the royal family thankfully did say that her condition was non-cancerous.
Consequently, Prince William has taken time off from his royal duties to care for their children, Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte.
Princess Anne cautioned that a slimmed-down monarchy was not a suitable idea, but King Charles envisioned fewer working royals.
She remarked in May 2023, before the King’s coronation, that the monarchy was in poor health and would not survive in its current form.
Anne said,
“The royal family brings “long-term stability, continuity, and goodness to the UK and the Commonwealth. However, the Firm cannot accomplish this without enough team players.”
He could have Princess Beatrice and Eugenie work for the monarchy, but he doesn’t think they have the appropriate image to represent the Firm.
Prince Andrew’s legal woes also make Charles wary of including the sister as working royals. The current state of the monarchy does not help the Firm thrive the way it should.
King Charles is in favor of a smaller, cheaper monarchy. So that doesn’t exactly improve the situation.
Harry and Meghan Should Have Continued to Be Working Royals
Harry and Meghan have stepped down and are in the US, and Prince Andrew’s reputation is tarnished beyond repair. So that leaves only William, Kate, and King Charles.
As Kate recovers, Charles goes to the hospital himself. The King will soon receive treatment for an enlarged prostate.
At one point, the working monarchy consisted of eighteen royals who would always be available to carry out royal duties and engagements. Royal engagements include trips abroad, state functions, and other activities.
There are only seven working royals, making it difficult for the monarchy to continue business as usual.
If Harry and Meghan were not in California, two more sets of hands would help. Prince Andrew would also be available to work if he hadn’t been involved with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are largely responsible for the current state of the monarchy. There aren’t enough members working and attending royal engagements.
Harry and Meghan had the opportunity to serve the Commonwealth and squandered it. It would have been a much better situation for them to remain in the UK and continue to be working royals.
Royal expert Tom Bower made this statement,
“Our hearts go out to the King and the Princess of Wales. Their absence from our daily lives will make us appreciate them and the monarchy even more. However, this is not a moment to reverse the trend and slim down the monarchy.”
In any case, Kate seems to be recovering nicely and is surrounded by her family.
