There’s been a lot of news coming out about “General Hospital” today, and very little of it’s good as we’re mourning the passing of Jackie Zeman from a short battle of cancer, according to ABC. She was 70.
But with the bad news comes some good as ABC is going all in on “General Hospital’s” 60th anniversary with a new streaming channel where fans can relive some fan favorite moments called “General Hospital” Spotlight Channel.
The channel is a free, ad supported, and doesn’t require a log in or membership to watch the episodes.
While it’s an awesome step and one fans have been clamoring for, but it’s limited at this time to episodes from February 5, 2018 to April 27, 2018.
As was the case during the pandemic when three of the soaps were playing reruns, the fans want episodes from the 1980s and 1990s, not the last five years, but there should be more to come over time.
New opportunities
The news came curtesy of soapoperanews.net, and they also shared a promo with Laura Wright (Carly Spencer) and Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos).
Laura started it off by saying, “It’s the best part of Port Charles, Watch full episodes of ‘General Hospital’ on the all-new ‘General Hospital’ Spotlight Channel, only on ABC.com and the ABC App. So, come with me, Laura Wright…” Maurice added, “And me, Maurice Benard. Relive your favorite storylines over and over beginning with Sonny and Mike’s Alzheimer’s saga.”
More than a treat for fans, this will open the door for ABC to explore the possibility of going full streaming like NBC did with “Days of Our Lives” on Peacock.
Since moving exclusively to Peacock, “Days of Our Lives” is reportedly one of, if not the highest viewed show on the network.
Given how religiously ABC likes to break into the show for any news segment that can wait until the next hour or inform us via a scroll along the bottom of the screen, a move to streaming would eliminate that.
It’d be nice knowing we’ll get to see our show in its entirety and not on the whims of someone at the ABC television network.
It’s going to be fun seeing these old episodes again, and even more fun to see if this will turn into something more down the road.
