Jay Leno‘s sense of humor was unaffected by the accident that left him with third-degree burns. After being critically damaged in a gasoline fire last month, the comedian joked that he has “a brand-new face,” adding, “It’s better than what was there before.”
In a Wall Street Journal column published Sunday, Leno, 72, reflected on the experience, saying that despite suffering “severe” burns, he refuses to be stressed about it. He joked about his burns saying,
“Really, it was an accident, that’s all. Anybody who works with their hands on a regular basis is going to have an accident at some point. If you play football, you get a concussion or a broken leg. Anything you do, there’s a risk factor. You have to joke about it. There’s nothing worse than whiny celebrities. If you joke about it, people laugh along with you.”
Comedian Jay Leno Jokes His ‘Brand-New Face’ Is ‘Better’ Than It Was Before
On Nov. 12, Leno was fiddling with one of his vehicles, a 1907 White Steam automobile, when a fuel leak showered his hands and face with gas, which ignited and set him flames.
The “Jay Leno’s Garage” performer was sent to a burn clinic and received a variety of treatments, including two grafting procedures to remove bad tissue and encourage healing, as well as many hyperbaric chamber sessions to “reduce swelling” and “boost blood flow with good oxygenation.”
Since then, Leno has returned to work. He returned to the comedy stage shortly after a 10-day hospital stint, performing in front of a sold-out crowd at Comedy Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California. The comedian was also seen returning to the garage where he was burned.
