On Thursday, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham’s marriage was the subject of a “joke” made by Whoopi Goldberg on air. Following what appeared to be backlash from ABC executives for ‘joking’ that Graham was getting married, Goldberg suggested she might have to leave the program she has co-hosted since 2007 in an awkward apology on The View on Thursday.
Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary for the White House, criticized the South Carolina senator for calling for a national ban on abortions after 15 weeks during the conversation in which she made her remark. Jean-Pierre told the hosts, “We have Lindsey Graham, Senator Graham and other and other leaders of the Republican Party who are saying, and they’re being very clear about this, folks, we got to listen to them that they want a national ban on abortions.”
Whoopi Goldberg Awkwardly Apologizes For Lame Marriage Joke Directed Towards Lindsey Graham
However, just a few months ago he believed it was a decision for the states to make, not a national decision. Jean-Pierre questioned, “So, Senator Graham, what changed?” Whoopi, a longtime comedian, found this as the perfect opportunity to make a joke, a little joke by the way, firing back, “Well, maybe he’s getting married.” Obviously joking that that’s why he suddenly wants it and cohost Joy Behar doubted that was the reason as the audience cheered.
Goldberg then continued. “Do it quick, because I know people are fooling around with our marriage rights, whoever, wherever you stand, you know.” The left have long speculated that the lifelong bachelor may be gay in secret; over the years, comedians like Bill Maher, Jon Steward, and Patti Lupone have made crude remarks about or implied references to his sexual orientation.
Twitter and other social media platforms are also frequently used for such conversations. However, when the program resumed after a break for commercials, Goldberg appeared wrinkly-faced as she informed the audience that she needed to “make clear that I was doing what I do as a comic.”
Why apologize for such a little joke like that? Especially from a comedian… Are we really not allowed to make these little, tiny one-line jokes anymore?
