Are you ready? Or better yet, do you think the world is ready? Squid Game will return for a second season, Netflix Inc announced on Sunday, offering a few hints about what is to come in the dark Korean drama. Here’s what you need to know.
Seeing how Squid Game has managed to generate almost $900 million for the online streaming giant in revenue, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that season 2 is happening. The South Korean-based series is about indebted people in a deadly contest for a cash prize, generated $891.1 million in impact value, a metric the company uses to assess the performance from individual shows. Squid Game became Netflix’s most-watched series when it was released in September 2021. It inspired countless memes and Halloween costumes and kickstarted sales of green tracksuits.

And now writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has teased a few details about the show’s second season in a letter released by Netflix. Characters Gi-hun and The Front Man will return, he said, and “the man in the suit with ddakji might be back.”
“You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend,” he added. Young-hee is a motion-sensing animatronic doll featured in one of the games.
Back in October, Hwang Dong-hyuk told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview, “There are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed. For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, the Front Man. So if I end up creating season two, I’d like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers? And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode.”
He added, “And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun’s story as he turns back, and explore more about how he’s going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games. So, I don’t know yet, but I’ll just say there are a lot of possibilities out there for season two storylines.”
Netflix did not say when the new season would be released.
