Angelina Jolie Forced to Take Shelter During Surprise Visit to Ukraine
The 46 year old is a special envoy for the United Nations refugee agency. Only last month Jolie visited Yemen where millions of people have been displaced by a much less publicized, yet ongoing war.
The United Nations refugee agency have estimated that more than 12.7 million Ukrainians have fled their homes since Putin began his invasion of their country. This number represents around 30% of Ukraine’s pre-war population.
Before the air-raid sirens blasted, Jolie met with volunteers who are currently working with the displaced Ukrainians. This includes psychiatrists who meet with approximately 15 people a day. She also took time to speak with the victims of Putin’s war.
Many of those in the station where Jolie spent her morning are children between he ages of 2 and 10 years old. Jolie was especially affected by these young victims of the atrocities.
“They must be in shock … I know how trauma affects children, I know just having somebody show how much they matter, how much their voices matter, I know how healing that is for them,” she assured.
Before she was ushered away to safety, Jolie posed for photos with the volunteers and reached out to some of the children.
It is expected that the Maleficent actress will be visiting more displaced war victims in the country as a part of her United Nations position as soon as it is safe for her to do so.
