His publicist announced that he died due to complications from muscular dystrophy.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor,” his family wrote on Twitter.
Comedian And Actor Gilbert Gottfried Has Died At 67
Gottfried will always be remembered for her crude humor, political incorrectness and stage voice that was as iconic as his comedy. He used it for a variety of things, including his jokes, children’s cartoons and films and most notable the Aflac duck.
However, his edgy humor got him in trouble more than a few times. Three weeks after the September 11th terrorist attacks, Gottfied jokes that he couldn’t catch a direct flight from New York to California because, ‘they said they have to stop at the Empire State Building first.”
While the joke was declared ‘too soon’, he was able to win the audience over and quickly made headlines by telling one of the first 9/11 jokes.
Ironically, this brass humor and dirty joke-telling landed him in several children’s projects, most notably in ‘Aladdin’ as the villain’s parrot, Iago. Even more so, he appeared alongside fellow comedian Robin Williams, who was also known for his dirty humor, yet the two became icons in their roles and outside of the children’s roles, never slowed down with their own comedy.
We wish the best for his family, and may he rest in peace. He was just 67.
