Michael K. Williams, star of 12 Years a Slave, When They See Us and most notably, the drama series The Wire died back in September of 2021 in what was first ruled by the medical examiners as an accidental overdose.

However, four men, thought to be part of a drug distribution ring have been charged this week in his, what has now been ruled as acute drug intoxication overdose, death.

All four distributors were arrested Tuesday, February 1 –three in New York and one in Puerto Rico and have been remanded in custody in Manhattan.

The defendants have made their initial appearances in a US federal court and are facing narcotics conspiracy charges. It has been alleged that their ring distributed fentanyl-laced heroin which resulted in the death of 54-year-old Williams.

According to court reports, the drug trafficking organization has been in operation since at least 2020 in Williamsburg, a neighborhood in Brooklyn. On September 5, the day William’s overdosed, one member of the organization was captured on CCTV making an exchange with the actor.

Screenshots were taken from the surveillance video of defendant Irvin Cartagena “executing a hand-to-hand transaction”- believed to be heroin laced with fentanyl- and presented in court

A U.S. attorney made a statement about the alleged crimes and current charges of the drug trafficking ring, saying they are a part of a “public health crisis.”

“And it has to stop. Deadly opioids like fentanyl and heroin don’t care about who you are or what you’ve accomplished. They just feed addiction and lead to tragedy,”

Police detectives, who were said to be extremely focused on this case, have also alleged that the four men who have now been charged continued to sell fentanyl-laced heroin, often out in the open during the day, even after knowing that the actor had died from their laced products.
