Adele gets cancelled for… being a woman?

Adele most recently won a Brit Award for Artist of the year. The name of the award had changed to reflect its now gender neutral status, now anyone of any gender can win the award, male, female, non-binary, what have you, but Adele unfortunately put her foot in her mouth when she went up to accept the award.

She said, “I realize the reason that the name of this award has changed, but I want to say that I really love being a woman, being a female artist.” but that earned her a lot of flack from activists online, who have now labeled her a TERF, which means Trans-Exclusionary Radical Femininist.

Adele gets cancelled for… being a woman?

In her entire statement, she didn’t say one thing about trans people, nor did she slander anyone of any gender, but yet simply because she’s proud of her gender as a whole and of being a female artist, she is being called a TERF. It’s one thing to call out things when a celebrity says something damaging or intentionally hurtful, it’s another thing when they’re just stating a fact and they get dragged for it anyway.

She likes being a woman, she likes being a female artist, rule of law says that it is not libel if it’s fact, and these are two facts – Adele is female and Adele is an artist, she is proud of that.

But there seems to be a narrative that thinks that simply pointing out the truth in a situation that might be hurtful to someone else will cause irreparable damage and it’s getting to where no one can say anything anymore without disclaimers. Should we all just start wearing disclaiming sandwich signs in these times?

Because activism is good when it has a point but this is… pointless. Adele was simply stating a fact, or, “living her truth” and if someone else can live their truth without bashing the other side, then… so can Adele.

Activism is a wonderful tool when people are actively being hurt by statements, or if there’s harmful misinformation going around or actual slurs going around, but Adele said nothing of the sort. It’s not wrong for her to be proud for her gender, let her be.
