In the Grinchiest move ever (and in a way that’s going to make a lot of parents hate this organization), the ACLU is now attempting to cancel Elf on the Shelf.
Elf on the Shelf started as a 2005 children’s book and toy, it was a fun little Christmas tradition where parents would get the little elf doll and move it around to various places – but the kids themselves were never supposed to touch the elf, or else it would lose its magic. Why was it moving? To keep better tabs on the kids to report back to Santa.
ACLU tries to cancel “Elf on the Shelf”
Now anyone who has grown up in the last hundred years or so knows that Santa Claus has his ways of keeping tabs on people, he’s magic so he has ways of doing things that are way more advanced than the FBI or CIA and he doesn’t need spyware or tracking devices – he just knows.
We assume that there has to be some sort of divine intervention there because that’s a lot of kids to keep track of. Either way, the ACLU is now saying that Elf on the Shelf normalizes surveillance and that privacy matters, but they don’t want to be the ones to take Santa to court over these things.
…Did we just flip the timeline into some whacko dystopian version of Miracle on 34th street? Because certainly these highly educated, well paid employees of the ACLU know just how this sounds right now. Yes, privacy matters… between actual, living, breathing, people and not a question of what social construct is appropriate to teach your children.
The thing is, Santa is only a thing once a year, and it’s a real incentive to get kids to behave, because every kid wants to be visited by Santa – hey, free gifts! – but now the ACLU is trying to say that a being, who is literally hundreds of years old, who happens to employ a tiny toy elf, is up to ‘nefarious purposes’.
Sure, Jan.
Maybe their New Years Resolution should be to focus on real problems instead of trying to police a magical being. They’re not going to get very far. Stay tuned!!!
