The Kyle Rittenhouse trial made national news and his not guilty verdict has created waves around the country. Like it or hate it, a jury found Rittenhouse not guilty and that he reacted accordingly with self-defense. Strangely enough, there has been an outcry of calling Rittenhouse a ‘white supremacist’. I’m as confused as you are as the men who were shot were all white.

Not only that, there’s also the fact that Rittenhouse is white, which people have been using against him, from political figures to Hollywood actors, saying if he were black, there’s no way he would have gotten off with self-defense. Well, there’s a case in Florida that may put that to rest as a black man just had a self-defense charge.

The TC Palm reported on Friday.

“A jury found Andrew ‘A.J.’ Coffee IV, 27, not guilty of second-degree felony murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer by discharging a firearm, and one count of shooting or throwing a deadly missile.“

At around 5 am in the morning, camouflaged SWAT officers arrived at the home of Coffee in Gifford, Florida. Coffee was asleep and awoke to see a rifle sticking into his window. Thinking he was being robbed, he fired two or three shots through the window.

SWAT returned fire and Andrew Coffee’s 21-year-old girlfriend, Alteria Woods, was killed after reportedly being struck by 10 bullets fired by the SWAT team. While he was found innocent for the self defense, he still faces several charges including possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon which could land him up to 30 years in prison.

While their two stories are wildly different, the comparisons in the self-defense cases continue to pile in. The kicker being that Coffee is a black man, which defeats the ‘white supremacy’ and ‘it’s because Kyle is white’ arguments.

Speaking on the case, Coffee’s lawyers said,

“We argued successfully, clearly, that there was some overreaction and overreach by the sheriff’s department on that raid. They should have pulled back, they didn’t. And this is what happens when you go into a volatile situation without all the information.”

What do you think? Do you think there is a comparison to draw between these two? Let us know in the comments below.
