The news about Britney Spears has been good for fans compared to what was happening last year, or even earlier this year. Now that the singer has been able to speak for herself, the tide has definitely turned. There was a time when everything Britney said or did was looked at in a negative light and she was the favorite tabloid fodder.
However, that celeb obsession that fed the paparazzi beast has also been credited with getting Britney into the conservatorship to begin with. Now, she’s enjoying a lot of positive press. But a recent article asks some tough questions about the future and celeb coverage. Let’s take a look.
Britney Spears Isn’t Alone
Britney wasn’t the only celeb of her generation to face the harsh glare of the spotlight. And it’s really easy to get sucked into the hype. For years, people were going on about Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and others. And the obsession for more info turned into a huge business for photographers who follow their every move.
A recent Yahoo! Article examined this phenomenon and what it has meant for female celebrities in particular. We can’t say we disagree with this. We remember following the teen pop explosion of the ‘90s. And we noticed the way the girls in particular were talked about was different.
Boy band stars could stand shirtless as water pours down on them, and we didn’t hear a huge uproar about it. Britney came out in the schoolgirl outfit, and it was both an instant sensation and a source of controversy. Plus, we won’t even get into how the males of the genre were not ask invasive questions about their sex lives—or lack thereof. So, it was no surprise that things got out of hand.
Defending Britney Spears
The article in question asks about the test that’s ahead. But, as the title says, it’s not a test for Britney Spears. It’s a test for the public at large. While the article didn’t exactly come to any particular conclusion as to whether we’ll ultimately pass that test or not—it’s too soon to tell—we do think there’s a hint. It pointed out the fans are becoming more vocal about not using pap pictures of Britney in posts, or sharing them. In fact, it specifically talks about one Twitter user who caught some backlash for a picture they shared.
We’ve noticed more fans choosing not to use these pictures when speaking of Britney. We’ve also noticed how hard they’ve called out some of the big gossip sites for some of their coverage, and the role they helped play in her image. So, we do think there’s been a shift in behavior and perspective since the star was able to speak out about the situation she was in.
Supporting Britney Spears
Another thing that gives us reason to believe we’ll pass the test as a culture is the way we see fans talking about Britney today in relation to her career. We’ve seen a lot of people go on about artists like Kelly Clarkson and how they are just waiting for the breakup music and similar comments. So many have pushed in the past for more material from artists, no matter what the person’s personal circumstances.
Today, Britney fans are more than willing to wait for material—if they get it at all. Fans mostly seem to want Britney to do whatever it is she wants to do. Again, a huge shift from what others might have said back in the early-to-mid 2000s. Overall, we believe that time will judge what happened in this situation harshly, and we believe people will shift more to tuning out the ultra invasive/negative reporting—even if the paps will be slow to catch up. Who knows? Maybe that will be Britney’s next mission. To hold those basically staking out her home accountable.
