The world of NASCAR was rocked by an incident that occurred last Saturday. John Wes Townley, who is a former driver, was killed in Georgia. He allegedly attacked his ex-wife and a close male friend with a hatchet!
Around 9 p.m. EST, the Athens-Clarke County police received a call that there had been shots fired at the 200 block of Morton Avenue in the Athens Five Points area and it turns out that it was linked to Townley’s attack on this man and his ex-wife.
NASCAR: Driver Shot After Attacking His Ex with a Hatchet
This may sound like a crazy story, but get ready, you actually have no idea how crazy this is about to get! Townley and his ex-wife had both been shot! He was shot in the chest and died instantly. Police stated, “A preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Townley had arrived at this location and attacked [Zachary] Anderson and Ms. Townley with a hatchet. The Townleys’ divorce had been finalized this week.”
Anderson fired many shots at the couple and they were both hit. According to the police, it seems that her wound was a complete accident. The shooting happened at the Townley home and it looks as if Laura was still living there. The police continued, We are not ruling out that it is potentially a self-defense type incident. Preliminary report indicates that to be the case. But, of course, it is still under investigation. It is very early on in the investigation.”
As of right now, no charges have been placed against Anderson. Laura is expected to fully recover from her injuries and she is currently in the hospital John died at the hospital. This story seems very bizarre and it does seem as if Anderson was trying to protect himself against Townley. Who wouldn’t try to disarm a man wielding a hatchet?!
Townley was in many NASCAR races in his career. He raced from 2008 to 2016. He even raced in a Truck Series race back in 2015. He and his ex-wife did file for divorce a few months ago because things were not working out in their marriage.
Some are specualting that Anderson may have been her new boyfriend and that is why John went after him with a hatchet. The Athens-Clarke County police are still trying to find more information about just what happened. It seems as if Anderson isn’t giving out too much information.
