The story of South Carolina lawyer, Alex Murdaugh has started to really turn some heads. He was surprisingly shot just three months after his wife, Maggie Murdaugh and his son, Paul Murdaugh, were murdered at their hutting lodge. Many onlookers thought that their murders were just part of a string of crimes in the area, but after Alex was shot, things started to look a little suspicious.
True Crime: Alex Murdaugh Shooting Explored
Now it seems as if Alex was attempting to kill himself so that his son would be able to receive millions of dollars in life insurance. Just this last Tuesday, the man that was hired to kill Alex, got arrested in South Carolina. He was charged for assisted suicide, assault, and battery. He was also charged for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.
From what Curtis Edward Smith told police, he was hired by Murdaugh to shoot him in the head so that his son would receive about $10 million in life insurance after he died. The shooting happened on September 4 and Murdaugh was changing a flat tire on the side of the road when Smith shot him in the head. He was found by another driver and taken to the local hospital to be treated.
This isn’t the only thing that Smith has been charged for though. He has some methamphetamine charges against him, as well as possession of marijuana. He is now in a detention center in South Carolina. As for Murdaugh, there are a lot of rumors still going around about what he had planned and if he actually planned the murder of his wife and son too. This is not where it ends with him though.
Murdaugh is being investigated by many different agencies currently. It looks as if he has stole finds from the law firm that his great-grandfather established and has been running for over 100 years. Before these shootings, the law firm was questioning Murdaugh about the loss of over $1 million! The money had disappeared really quickly and the law firm contacted the South Carolina Bar Association about it.
His lawyer made a statement on Monday, “Alex resigned from the firm after being accused of diverting lawyer fees. These allegations prompted him to confront his dependency and he voluntarily checked into an in-patient substance abuse rehab facility after being discharged from the hospital Monday.”
There have been no leads on the murder of his wife, but we will keep you all posted on any new developments.
