Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced at the company’s Connect event that the company’s new name is Meta. Speaking on the name change, Zuckerberg said,

“We are a company that builds technology to connect. Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy. To reflect who we are and what we hope to build,” he added. He said the name Facebook doesn’t fully encompass everything the company does now, and is still closely linked to one product. “But over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company.”

Zuckerberg owns the Twitter handle @meta and now meta.com, which will redirect to a welcome page on Facebook, which reads “3D spaces in the metaverse will let you socialize, learn, collaborate and play in ways that go beyond what we can imagine. Listen to Mark Zuckerberg share our vision for bringing the metaverse to life together.”

It basically sounds like he wants to create the Matrix… A 3d space where you can socialize, learn and play… Sounds like we’ve seen this one before.

As it stands now, Meta.com will redirect to Facebook.com, and it just describes the company under which Facebook and Instagram (among others) will exist. Similar to when Google changed to Alphabet to explore more developments like their self-driving cars.

Zuckerberg also announced that the company’s corporate structure would not change, though they will have a new stock ticker.

“We also intend to start trading under the new stock ticker we have reserved, MVRS, on December 1. Today’s announcement does not affect how we use or share data.”

If you by chance have stock in Facebook, be sure to keep an eye on it.

What do you think? Are you a fan of the name change and what do you think about their plans with it? Let us know in the comments below.
