‘Jeopardy!’ spoilers find that Matt Amodio has finally been defeated after 38 incredible wins on the long running quiz show.
The 30 year old Yale University Ph.D. student was beaten out by both of Monday’s contestants, Jonathan Fisher- an actor from Florida who now has the title of carry over champion and statistical research specialist, Jessica Stephens who, though she will not return to continue competing, can still brag that she beat Matt Amodio.
For the first time in all of his appearances, Amodio came into Final Jeopardy in third place. He then got the answer for the Final Jeopardy clue incorrect.
‘Jeopardy!’ Spoilers: Long Reigning Champ, Matt Amodio Finally Dethroned
Temporary host, Mayim Bialik told the history making competitor after his shocking loss, “It has been an honor and a pleasure to watch you here.”
The contestant with the second most consecutive wins in Jeopardy! history brought home $1,518,601 in overall earnings. Only Jeopardy! GOAT, Ken Jennings has spent more time playing the regular game with a mind-blowing 74 wins in a row.
Amodio’s cash winnings place him in the number three spot behind James Holzhauer ($2,462,216) and Jennings ($2,520,700) for regular game play, and fourth when taken into consideration extra tournaments. Brad Rutter has won a total of $4,688,436 with his Jeopardy! winnings with regular game play and tournament game plays combined.
“Everybody’s so smart and so competent that this could happen any game,” Amodio said in a statement after his loss. “And this time it did.”
“I always wanted to be a Jeopardy! champion, and I accomplished that,” he continued, minimizing the incredible run he had that stretched over two seasons and many, many guest hosts, “l know going into every bar trivia game that I play that I’m going to come in with a little intimidation factor. But also, I just like the badge that it represents.”
“As somebody who prioritizes knowledge and knowing things, this is really a good one to have following me everywhere,” he added.
Fans will see Amodio again when he appears on the upcoming Tournament of Champions season. Here he will face Jeopardy!’s winningest players from the previous season.
It will be interesting to see if Amodio and Jennings will ever get the chance to face off, or if Amodio ends up joining Jennings, Rutter and Holzhauer on another ABC, primetime quiz show, The Chase.
