Jeopardy! host Mike Richards didn’t even have the chance to get back behind the podium before his tenure as permanent host was over.
Jeopardy! New Host, Mike Richards Has Already Resigned Amid Intense Backlash
On Friday, Richards, who has served as executive producer on Jeopardy! since 2019 resigned from the role, sharing a memo with Jeopardy! staff
Dear Team,
It pains me that these past incidents and comments have cast such a shadow on Jeopardy! as we look to start a new chapter.
As I mentioned last week, I was deeply honored to be asked to host the syndicated show and was thrilled by the opportunity to expand my role. However, over the last several days it has become clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show. As such, I will be stepping down as host effective immediately. As a result, we will be canceling production today.
SPT will now resume the search for a permanent syndicated host. In the meantime, we will be bringing back guest hosts to continue production for the new season, details of which will be announced next week.
I want to apologize to each of you for the unwanted negative attention that has come to Jeopardy! over the last few weeks and for the confusion and delays this is now causing. I know I have a lot of work to do to regain your trust and confidence.
Mike
The distraction Richards referred to was a plague of scandals that were rehashed including lawsuits being filed by models on the Price is Right during Richards’ tenure as Executive Producer and, more recently, derogatory comments he made about women on his podcast some 7 years ago. He was also accused of rigging the Jeopardy! host selection in his favor.
Richards apologized for his podcast comments but said of the lawsuits that “the way in which my comments and actions have been characterized in these complaints does not reflect the reality of who I am or how we worked together on The Price Is Right.” He also denied selecting himself to succeed the late, great Alex Trebek who passed away in November of 2020.
Actress and neuroscientist, Mayim Bialik was selected as host for the Jeopardy! primetime spinoffs. With Richards copping most of the heat, Bialik has been left somewhat alone. She did draw criticism for past comments she had made about vaccines but has since assured critics she is “not at all an anti-vaxxer.”
With more guest hosts returning as Sony seeks a new permanent host, fans will be chomping at the bit for LeVar Burton to get another shot- claiming he was shortchanged having the last tenure before the Tokyo Olympics. Richards has seemingly not resigned from the executive producer role with the long-running quiz show.
Stay tuned for more Jeopardy intel as we receive it and watch Trebek in all his hosting glory as reruns are currently being aired weeknights on NBC.
