‘Jeopardy’ Champion Matt Amodio Officially Became a Millionaire This Week

This Friday marked Jeopardy! champ, Matt Amodio’s 28th win in a row. The bigger threshold that was crossed, however, was Amodio’s winnings going over the $1 million dollar mark!

Raking in $1,004,001 as at the end of Final Jeopardy! on Friday’s episode, Amodio has official joined the Jeopardy! GOATs Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer as the top three money winners- all hitting seven figures in regular-season play (i.e. not counting the Tournament of Champions or other extra competitions, in which third GOAT, Brad Rutter takes the title of highest winning Jeopardy! contestant ever, amassing over $5 million)

“This was beyond my wildest dreams going in,” Amodio, a Ph.D. student at Yale said in a statement. “I knew it was a possibility, but I thought it was a very remote possibility, and to have it actually happen is unbelievable.”

After hitting the $1 million plus threshold, Amodio is next poised to surpass Holzhauer’s 32-game winning streak. He will have to keep winning for a while yet, however, if he wants to equal the professional sports gambler’s winnings. Holzhauer won just over $2.4 million over his 32 day reign, averaging over $75,00 per game. Amodio is more conservative than Holzhauer in his wagers, with an average of $34,114 in winnings per game.

Holzhauer couldn’t help but poke a little fun/toot his own horn on Twitter about the comparisons the two champs have been getting

Amodio would likely need to meet Jennings’ 74 game streak to amass Houlzhauer’s winnings…which is looking very possible.

Out of his 28 wins, Amodio has gone into Final Jeopardy in a position where he could not be caught by his fellow contestants over 90% of the time. The 30 year old has rarely missed a Final Jeopardy answer- or any answer for that matter.

One title that Amodio has already taken is the contestant to see the biggest number of hosts. Starting his winning streak during season 37, Amodio first appeared on July 21’s episode with Robin Roberts as host (Amodio’s first return as champ coincided with what would have been long time, late host, Alex Trebek’s 81st birthday).

Amodio’s amazing run has also seen him work with LeVar Burton, David Faber, Joe Buck, Mike Richards and Mayim Bialik as host. If Matt can continue winning until November 5, he will also see fellow GOAT Ken Jennings behind the podium…but personally I want to see the two go head-to-head.

Jeopardy! airs weeknights on NBC- Go, Matt, go!
