People are swarming Barclays Center at the Brooklyn Nets home opener chanting ‘let Kyrie play’. Kyrie Irving has been benched since earlier this month when he refused to get vaccinated against coronavirus. On Sunday, hundreds gathered outside the stadium in protest while a smaller group actually pushed through barriers as they stormed the entrance.
Some of the protestors held up signs as others simply yelled through blowhorns, banged on doors, and also chanted ‘we will not comply’ while waving American flags.
Fans Chant ‘Let Kyrie Play!’ In Protest Of Irving Being Benched Over Refusal To Get Jabbed
At the moment, Irving cannot play until he provides proof that he received at least one vaccine shot. Until then, he will be ineligible to play. He stands to lose about half of his $35 million salary by refusing to get the shot, however, he stands by his decision and says he does not regret it.
Irving commented on his situation stating,
“So what? It’s not about the money. It’s not always about the money. It’s about choosing what’s best for you. You think I really want to lose money?”
One fuming protestor yelled as fans entered the stadium ahead of the game against the Charlotte Hornets,
“Are you guys OK with Kyrie Irving not being able to play because he refuses to be a slave? Are you guys OK with being slaves of the system? Giving up your bodies to be lab rats just so you can go to a restaurant; just so you can go to a basketball game?”
In September, the NBA reported that about 95% of their players were vaccinated, making Kyrie one of the few to refuse it.
What do you think? Do you agree with Kyrie’s decision and should he be benched for it? Let us know in the comments below.
