‘Survivor’ season 41 will look very different from its 40 predecessors when it premieres in September, with long time host, Jeff Probst promising not just a brand new era of the CBS staple, but a far more dangerous game.

Along with having only 18 castaways (this group aged between 20 and 52), new elements are being introduced, starting with cutting 13 days from the game.

With only 26 days of gameplay, Probst has stated the pace will speed up exponentially. The 59-year-old CBS personality says the shorter time frame will “force the players to make bigger decisions.”

CBS has also teased that supplies are minimal (no flint is a rumor currently doing the rounds), reward challenges are scarce and the players will find themselves facing ‘advantages’ that could significantly help their game or, with one misstep, extinguish their torch.

Probst mentioned “some controversial twists” and expects a level of backlash from diehard fans when they watch the newly formatted game for the first time.

“There’s a history on Survivor. Every twist we’ve ever done people have hated in the beginning, going to back to season 3 when we did the first tribe swap,” he explained. “Now if tribes don’t get a switch, they’re upset. It was the same with the idol, it’s the same with everything.”

One change that fans have already almost universally agreed is a positive one is that there is no “theme” to season 41. It is simply called “Survivor 41”

Along with things looking different on the island, a brand new “game within the game” element, described as “an interactive experience for junior, future Survivor players” will be launched this season. Probst explained that at home viewers will have the chance “to spot and solve puzzles hidden within each episode.”

The rebooted season 41 of Survivor premieres on CBS Wednesday, September 22, at 8 p.m.
