It appears as though Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been left just as speechless as everyone else over the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan. In fact, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a statement, in which they admitted to feeling both “devastated” and “speechless” over the current events in the Middle East and President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from the region. Here’s what you need to know.
The Taliban moved into several cities in the country in recent weeks, culminating in the takeover of the capital city of Kabul over the weekend.
“The world is exceptionally fragile right now. As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless,” Harry and Meghan said in their statement.

As many royal fans already know, Prince Harry previously serve in two deployments in Afghanistan with the British army. He also founded the Invictus Games in 2014 in an effort to use athletics and competition to inspire service members to recover both physically and mentally from injuries suffered in combat.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also mentioned Haiti, which was hit with a devastating earthquake, too. “As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, and the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken,” the couple said. “
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.”
“As an international community, it is the decisions we make now — to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet — that will prove our humanity,” the statement concluded.
