And… he’s outta there! Andrew Mark Cuomo has resigned as the Governor of New York after an investigation found that he had harassed multiple women. Cuomo said during a press conference he would formally leave office in two weeks and hand the reins to Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D). Here’s what you need to know.
Cuomo emphatically denied intentionally mistreating women and called the pressure for his ouster politically motivated. But he said that fighting back in this “too hot” political climate would subject the state to months of turmoil.
The third-term governor’s resignation, which will take effect in two weeks, was announced as momentum built in the Legislature to remove him by impeachment.

“This is one of the most challenging times for government in a generation. Government really needs to function today. Government needs to perform. It is a matter of life and death, government operations. And wasting energy on distractions is the last thing that state government should be doing,” Cuomo said.
“I think, given the circumstances, the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to governing. And therefore, that’s what I’ll do.”
With that said, Cuomo did say he takes “full responsibility” for his actions for making the women who came forward feel “uncomfortable.” Investigators said he subjected women to unwanted kisses; groped their breasts or buttocks or otherwise touched them inappropriately; made insinuating remarks about their looks and their sex lives; and created a work environment “rife with fear and intimidation.”
