While you can’t really blame someone for what they did during their teenage years, The Office alum Ellie Kemper is getting a lot of heat for a resurfaced photo that shows she was crowned queen at a ball that was linked to white supremacy.
Someone get Michael Scott on the phone because this calls for an emergency meeting. A photo showing Ellie attending a ball believed to be linked to white supremacy has resurfaced. The photo was taken in 1999, when the television actress was only 19 years old.
The Office Alum Ellie Kemper Linked To Debutante Ball With White Supremacy Ties
The photo was taken at St. Louis’ Veiled Prophet Ball, which is described as a secret fair originally formed in 1878 by elites to honor the ritual of Mardi Gras, and is reportedly associated with white supremacy. The organizers have also banned Black and Jewish members from attending the ball.
It’s also similar to a debutante ball in which parents present their children to society and has been around since the late 1870s and had an exclusionary past. It started in 1878 when grain executive and former Confederate cavalryman Charles Slayback called a meeting of local business and civic leaders.
So far Ellie Kemper herself has not made any comments about the controversy, but her critics on Twitter sure have.
Many of them wrote, “It really is something that Ellie Kemper was the star of a tv show about a woman who leaves a racist cult and tries to rebrand herself while pretending it never happened. No reason why I’m bringing this up of course.”
Another critic said, “People are really trying to make the case that this ‘tradition’ Ellie Kemper participated in wasn’t created by the klan or at least klan adjacent? Color me surprised.”
