Soap Con Live: The genre is getting into a the con thing, announcing a Comic-Con-like event called, you guessed it, Soap Con Live. The website describes this as a “By soap fans for Soap Fans” event. There are several different parts to this event, so let’s break it down. As well as a surprising observation about the line-up.
Soap Con Live brings the nostalgia
First, Soap Con Live will feature a panel on a surprising show: The Doctors. It’s a soap that ran from 1963 to 1982. According to the Wiki page, this was a unique show in the Daytime format, as the episodes were self-contained. However, expenses and low ratings kept forcing changes until it became serialized show two years into its run.

According to the website for the event, Nancy Stafford (Felicia/Adrienne Hunt), Anna Stuart (Toni Ferra-Powers), Frank Telfer (Luke Dancy) and Marie Thomas-Foster (Lauri James-Iverson) will be part of the panel. Check the panel page to see exactly when the event begins on May 1st.
There will also be panels focusing on One Life to Live and As The World Turns. You can find information about those here.
Soap Con Live: Stars and fans connect
Another perk of the event will be the ability to interact with the stars, just like you would at an in-person con. There will be opportunities for virtual meet-and-greets, as well as autographs, and video messages from the stars. Soap stars and vets participating include Kin Shriner (Scott Baldwin, General Hospital), Kassie DePaiva (Blair Cramer, One Life to Live), (Austin Peck Austin Reed, Days of Our Lives) and more. All My Children is also represented in the list of stars taking part. To see prices and book your own, check out the shop.
Soap Con Live: the strange part
We think Soap Con Live sounds like fun, and hope it continues. Other cons that went virtual during the Pandemic had some iffy results, but this event might have an advantage, in that it seems a new thing. But here’s one thing we found interesting while going through the schedule.
Besides a couple of actors having recently been on DOOL, most of the line-up and panels have left out today’s soaps. Only GH seems to be properly represented in the schedule, with a specific panel on Love and Tragedy. At this late a date, we don’t see much changing there. We’re hopeful that if the event comes back for another year, they’ll do a better job there.
