Prince Philip Left Upset Over Some Of The More Malicious Scenes In The Crown

Let’s just say Prince Philip was no fan of Netflix’s royal drama series, The Crown. In fact, there’s a new report that says the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away on Friday at the age of 99, was left very upset over some of the more malicious scenes from the series. Here’s what you need to know.

According to the Mail on Sunday, royal expert Sally Bedell Smith said that Philip was none too pleased about how the show portrayed him as someone who couldn’t stay faithful to his wife, Queen Elizabeth and how he also once threatened his daughter-in-law, Princess Diana.

The worst scene though was when Prince Philip’s father was shown angrily blaming him for his sister’s death in a plane crash. The episode suggested Philip was supposed to go to Germany to visit his sister, Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark, in 1937 but was forbidden after getting into trouble at school. In The Crown, Prince Philip’s father told him, “You are the reason we are all here, burying my favorite child.”

Bedell Smith aid that Philip “had nothing to do with his sister’s death,” which never caused a rift with his father.

“Cecilie did die in an air crash … that’s the only thing that was true,” she told the UK paper. “Everything else was invented in a shockingly malicious way.”

She also added that Netflix should release an apology to Prince Philip and the royal family.

“Now that he is gone, what they have done to his reputation is in even sharper relief,” she said.

Royal expert Hugo Vickers also said that Prince Philip had been “very upset” about the show.

“How disgraceful it was to turn Prince Philip into a caricature person – never doing any work in the series,” he told the UK paper.

“The depiction was cruel and deeply unfair. The least Netflix could do was to alert viewers with a disclaimer.”
