Hulu has just unveiled the trailer for ‘Kid 90’, an upcoming documentary by Soleil Moon Frye, better known to audiences as Punky Brewster.
The documentary blends Soleil’s self-taken footage of being a teenager growing up in the public eye in Hollywood and New York City, with interviews of Soleil’s celebrity teen friends who featured in her home videos.
The preview showed 90’s stars like Brian Austin Green, who became a household name when starring as David Silver in Beverly Hills 90210 and Mark Paul Gosselaar who has recently reprised his break-out role of Saved By The Bell’s Zack Morris.
‘Kid90’—Soleil Moon Frye’s new documentary will have you reaching for your flip phone to call your friends!
A slew of other kid stars who shared their awkward teen years in front of the cameras also appeared in the 3 minute clip like Balthazar Getty, Stephen Dorff and the late Johnathon Brandis. Brandis committed suicide in 2003 at age 27.
Soleil, now 44, directed the documentary showcasing the teen stars’ experiences growing up in the spotlight in the’90s. She shares in the preview that she carried a video camera everywhere in the 90’s but “had never really looked back at [the footage]”
After turning 40 she “decided to unlock Pandora’s box, and really it was meant to be about everyone but me, but it ended up becoming this really deeply personal coming-of-age story that really changed my life forever.”
The Punky Brewster star and her friends narrate the documentary and discuss the highs and lows of being in the public eye during their formative years.
“I didn’t know what true self-love was until this process,” Soleil discloses as the trailer ends.
Soleil appears to be very busy these days with a reboot of Punky Brewster returning to television via the Peacock streaming platform. Like Soleil, her alter ego is now all grown up and a mom herself, yet she still displays her spunk, her wild fashion sense and of course her Punky Power.
Catch Punky Brewster on Peacock commencing February 25 and Kid 90 premiering on Hulu March 12
