Zayn Malik took to Twitter recently to call out his displeasure at never having been nominated for a Grammy. It’s not like it’s unwarranted either, nor is he the only one calling out the Grammys, there are other talented artists who have never been nominated who have expressed their displeasure as well, The Weeknd, for instance, has expressed that he thinks the Grammys are unfair, Zayn is just the most recent artist to say anything.
It’s not like Zayn is some virtual unknown in the industry either, or “just a boyband member” anymore. He left One Direction to start off on his solo career and has been topping the charts ever since, so, where’s his nomination, eh Grammys?
Zayn Malik calls out The Grammys
Being a former member of One Direction should only add to his street cred because former fellow bandmate Harry Styles has three nominations under his belt, what gives? Zayn’s exact tweet was “F*** the grammys and everyone associated. Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations.
Nexy year, I’l send you a basket of confectionary.” as funny as this tweet sounds in theory, it’s very reminiscent of competing for homecoming queen in high school. Everyone remembers the pretty cheerleader who handed out baked goods and acted all charming to everyone’s face.
A few hours later, he followed up with, “My twet was not personal or about eligiibility but was about the need for inclusion and the lack of transparency of the nomination process and the space that creates and allows favoritism, racism, and networking politics to influence the voting process.”
Zayn is basically mad because the thing that should count towards being nominated for a Grammy, is doing the work, and I think we can all agree that selling millions of albums since 2016 counts as doing the work.
Let’s see how they rack up, shall we? Pillowtalk was the most streamed album of 2016, I don’t wanna live forever was the most steamed song of 2017 and was also on the soundtrack to the 50 shades saga, and can we just talk about how Disney chose him for the new cover of Whole New World in 2019’s live-action Aladdin?
He’s put in the work, he’s participated in the process, he has a right to be salty. A lot of fans are saying that the system is ‘rigged’. They also think that Zayn and The Weeknd should do a Grammy Diss collab.
Diss tracks are very 2015 but I could see Zayn and the Weekend having the ability to bring the A-Game to a normally pretty low artform. This probably won’t happen, but we’ll see. Stay tuned!!!
