Well, that sure went fast. It’s only been one hot minute since the world was first introduced to Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter Ella Emhoff and now it looks like she’s not only signed a modeling contract for herself, but she’s also already getting magazine covers.
The 21-year-old fashion design student is covering the Berlin-based art and fashion magazine Dust’s Spring 2021 issue. On the cover, Ella is dressed in a pastel patchwork knit jacket of her own design. Here’ what you need to know.
Vice President Kamala Harris Step-Daughter Ella Emhoff Lands Her First Magazine Cover
The magazine announced Ella Emhoff as one of its three cover stars over the weekend on Instagram. In her interview, which was conducted by artist Marina Abramovic over Zoom Ella opened up about her look during President Joe Biden’s inauguration, where she wore an embellished Miu Miu coat worn atop a ruffled Batsheva dress.
“The choice was honestly very spur-of-the moment. Personally, I like the cross between old and new. I love the doily-type collars, I obviously love knits, I love tartans, I love classic embroidery, and I wanted to make sure I stayed true to myself and keep that alive,” she explained.
Ella is currently a senior at Parsons School of Design in New York, where she is studying fine arts with a focus on textiles. She also recently signed a contract with one of the world’s most prestigious modeling agencies, IMG Models.
Ivan Bart, the president of IMG Models, spoke about the deal with the New York Times. “It’s not really about shape, size or gender any more,” Bart said. “Ella communicates this moment in time. There’s a cheekiness and a joy she exudes.”
Emhoff also said in the same interview, “I was pretty surprised when everything with IMG was happening because when I was younger, I never saw that as being part of my timeline. As someone who, like a lot of young girls out there, had self-confidence issues, it is intimidating and scary to go into this world that is hyper-focused on you and the body.”
Though Ella enjoys modeling her real love is her design work. “The dream is my own brand,” she said, adding, “I want to see guys, girls, people—I want to see everyone wearing colorful striped pants or my dresses.”
