And Meghan Markle thought she had it bad. There are new reports that say Mariah Carey is being sued by her older sister, Alison Carey, for intentional infliction of emotional distress over the singer’s claims about her siblings in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, which came out late last year. Here’s what you need to know.
In her complaint, Alison Carey referred to claims in the book that she gave 12-year-old Mariah Valium, tried to pimp her out and threw boiling tea on her. Alison has denied the claims, saying Mariah “presented no evidence to substantiate these serious allegations.”
Mariah Carey’s Sister Sues Her For Emotional Distress
Alison, who was 20 at the time the alleged events took place, filed her two-page legal complaint at New York Supreme Court on Monday. She says that the outrageous claims that was made in Mariah’s book were apparently made to humiliate and embarrass her.
Mariah used “her status as a public figure to attack her penniless sister, generating sensational headlines describing her lurid claims to promote sales of her book,” Alison says in the court documents, according to reports. She is now seeking damages for the “heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable and totally unnecessary public humiliation.”
“Defendant used her status as a public figure to attack her penniless sister, generating sensational headlines describing her lurid claims to promote sales of her book,” the court documents read. “Defendant’s cruel and outrageous allegations have devastated the plaintiff. Already struggling with the unspeakable trauma of her childhood and having her own children abandon her, she has become severely depressed and uncharacteristically tearful since the publication of defendant’s book and now struggles, after a long time clean, with alcohol abuse.”
Back in September, Mariah Carey opened up about her family during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. She claimed that her sister Alison was “troubled and traumatized.”
“We don’t even really know each other … we didn’t grow up together, but we did,” Mariah said. “Like, they were on their journeys, by the time I got into the world, they had already been damaged, in my opinion. But again, I wasn’t there. I was dropped into this world and I literally felt like an outsider amongst my own family.”
