There’s a good reason why Christmas is so important to Mariah Carey these days. The ‘Queen of Christmas’ recently revealed that she makes sure that each and every holiday that she spends with her family are made to be special ones, just because she experienced rather sad ones during her own dysfunctional childhood. Here’s what she has to say.

Speaking to Elle Magazine in a new interview, the ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’ singer opened up about her fixation on the holiday.

Mariah said, “I think it’s just that longing that I had as a child, that I always wanted things to be perfect for the holidays … And they never were. It was always somebody ruining the moment, always these dysfunctional family members who came around and foiled everything.”

As a result, Mariah said that she made a pact with herself that she wouldn’t allow terrible holidays to happen anymore, or at least not on her watch. She said, “After I kind of emerged from my first relationship-slash-marriage, I created the Christmases that I wanted to have.”

Meanwhile, and speaking about that first ‘relationship-slash-marriage,’ Mariah also recently opened up about her failed marriage to her ex-husband, music producer Tommy Mottola. Mariah and Tommy were married between 1993 and 1998 with the singer likening her ex-husband to a “very controlling father or a warden.”

Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, Mariah recalled a time when she went to get food with rappers Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat and the R&B girl group Xscape while they were working on a remix for her 1995 hit son, “Always Be My Baby.” Tommy did not like the fact that Mariah left the studio without consulting with him first.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s go for a ride,’ because it was normal for most people to just leave their house and go literally five minutes down the street to get French fries or you know … just take a ride,” Carey explained. “… it became a huge drama. And it’s one of my favorite stories in the book because you have to laugh at it.”
